The Art of Plexiglass

Creating an Exceptional Coffee Table
or Console

Plexiglass, or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), is no longer reserved for industrial display cases alone. Today it takes pride of place in our interiors as minimalist furniture. Its crystal-clear transparency offers an unmatched sense of lightness, able to turn a cluttered room into an airy, modern space.
But how do you go from a rigid sheet to a console with flowing curves? Here are the secrets behind the artisanal crafting of this fascinating material.

Why choose Plexiglass for your furniture?

Unlike glass, plexiglass is:

  • Lighter: Easy to move around to suit your décor.

  • Stronger: It does not shatter on impact.

  • More transparent: It lets through up to 92% of light, more than standard glass.

The Artisanal
Manufacturing Process

01

Design and Thickness Selection:

For a coffee table or console, the structure must support weight without sagging. Panels typically range from 15mm to 40mm thick. The design can be minimalist (a simple "bridge") or more complex with invisible joints.

02

Cutting:

Laser or Mechanical Precision
The sheet is cut to the exact dimensions. Using a laser produces clean edges, but for thick, handcrafted pieces, mechanical cutting followed by rigorous sanding to prepare for finishing is often preferred.

03

Thermoforming:

The Magic of Bending
This is where craftsmanship truly comes into its own. To create the legs of a console with no visible joins:

  • A precise area of the sheet is heated to around 150°C using a heating element.

  • Once softened, the plexiglass is gently bent over a jig.

  • It must then cool slowly to set its new shape without creating internal stresses.

04

Polishing:

The Quest for Brilliance

Caring for Your
Plexiglass Furniture

Avoid alcohol-based products

They can cause micro-cracks (crazing). Use soapy water or a specific anti-static cleaner.

Use a microfiber cloth

To avoid micro-scratches.

Renovation polishing

If scratches appear over time, it is possible to remove them with a mild polishing product.

A plexiglass coffee table or console is far more than a piece of furniture: it is a luminous sculpture. Whether you choose a single-piece thermoformed model or an assembled piece, the artisanal approach guarantees a finish that mass industry cannot match.
